Third, she has had 3 #1 hits out of 5 singles. I do see a lovely girl, and hear a lovely voice, and I think she may even improve, once she can sing songs better suited for her style. But, other than one or two performances, she just didn't grab me, no connection. I definitely SEE the appeal, she's pretty, blonde, sweet, non-confrontational, 'All-American' in many ways. But something was always missing for me. Carrie does have a good voice, very good range, strength and modulation. I think she became ill during the show and that hurt her in the later performances. But her stage presence was often stilted and stiff, her eyes did not seem to convey the emotions in the words, and she looked frightened or lost at times on the big-stage. Carrie's strengths are her pleasant appearance and vocals, especially in her stronger genre (country ballads). Her weakness is definitely a shallowness, a lack of emotion and connection to both the lyrics and the audience. She is rarely pitchy or off-key at all. Many of her vocal performances were outstanding. In short, she sings like a nightengale! She should have a great career as a country recording artist. She, however, seems to be able to sing only "country pop" and struggles with other types of music. Some of the hype surrounding her is quite frankly due to the fact that the judges in AI gave her a "free pass" to the finals. Their raving comments about performances that were way above-average vocally and way below average on the entertainment and "it" factors convinced the American public to vote her right into the finals. An American Idol needs to be strong vocally, but also a dynamic, fun performer on the stage. Her stage presence is stilted, stiff and boring. She seems completely uncomfortable with a microphone in her hand. In short, I would purchase her CD's, but never pay money to watch her live as she would probably put me to sleep. Hence, listening to her is like listening to a nightengale while watching paint dry. While her voice is very pretty, and she is an attractive cast member, her lack of originality, lack of versatility, and wooden stage performances may hurt her in the long run. I believe she is slated to win AI 4, but her country inspired crooning will limit her overall audience once she's off the television screen on a weekly basis. She doesn't seem to be very versatile, but she can carry a ballad or country tune well. Provide her with the correct type of songs, and her target audience will be pleased. When she is using her "country" voice she can sing with power and style, and she is fun to watch. But when she tries to sing other genres, she uses a different voice which has no breath support at all and sounds wimpy. I feel that often the backup singers were singing louder than she was and that the voters thought it was SHE who was singing powerfully. The weeks that the backup singers backed off, she sounded very weak, and even badly out of tune one week. Carrie is absolutely gorgeous and a good singer most of the time and will probably make it big in the country scene. Boring! But she lacks stage presence and the ability to emote when singing. However the glimpses of personality shown in the Ford commercials and behind the scenes footage over the weeks , do show that she is a likeable girl , if not a little dimwitted. I have no idea why she continues to perform country songs when they have consistently made for weak performances , meanwhile her forays into pop/rock (Love Is A Battlefield , Trouble) have been her best. Hopefully the producers realize this and encourage her to break out of the country box and into a style of music for which she is better suited. She has the ability to sing many genres, even though they keep trying to box her into "only country" which I think is a mistake. I thought she did fine on the rock numbers she did. It doesn't help her any for them to label her. She does need to work on showmanship and feeling. She doesn't convey enough at the right times. It may just be something that time will help with---maybe some classes or sessions for choreography. She may show more personality in a different venue and audience. A lot of the previous idols were not extremely outgoing in the performances during the contest but have proved to be a lot better once they got on tour or in a different setting---no judges etc. She may be the same way. The fact that when she has tried to move around, Simon has cut on her for it, maybe holding her down a little. I think that definitely affected others in the past. A prime example is Clay. Simon fussed big time if he showed an expressive fact or tried to move around---he would say Broadway, or musical or horrible. So Clay stopped doing much of it. Whereas anyone who has seen him in concert knows he is forever moving and emoting to a song.
