Anwar arguably had the best voice in the contest this year; definitely the best among all the men. He was deinitely able to take songs and make them his "own". Anwar: Unrealized Potential
May 20, 2005 01:15 PM ET
Reviewed by: FlyrGrl
Anwar has a very good voice, tending towards nasal, but not unpleasantly. He did have trouble finding the pitch at times, wavered and occasionally missed badly. Performed much better in the semi-final studio, with a smaller band. He clearly posesses strong musical knowledge. He is a very nice looking man who projects a quiet, sweet personality. I felt his stage-presence was lacking; that he looked nervous and uncomfortable, especially on the larger stage. He performed almost the same routine every week (sitting, then standing, walk a little, glory note ending). When he attempted to let loose and dance, he came across as awkward and his vocals suffered. Even thought the arrangement of some songs was unique, he still became predictable and a bit dull. His "Moon River" performance showed his potential, but it was not built upon.

Anwar exudes likeablitiy. He seems genuinely nice! I would love for him to teach music to my children or grandchildren. As singer, however, he was frequently quite off-key throughout the entire performance, not just at the nervous beginning of a song. I'll admit, he always belted out a thrilling, on-key high note at the end of each song that saved his performances from total vocal disaster. On stage, he wasn't always comfortable and it showed in some stiff, rather lifeless performances. At other times, he was dynamic and smooth. Even though I am a guy, I will agree that Anwar is good looking and LOOKS like an American Idol.

Anwar Robinson seems like a great guy who loves music. In the long run, I think his song selection hurt him more than anything else. "Moon River" and "What a Wonderful World" were pop standards decades ago, and were Robinson's best performances. He struggled when he tried to sing more modern selections. He has the look of a pop star, pleasant vocals, and if given the correct material to sing, may be successful outside of his classroom.

I had great hopes for him. I really liked him as a person, the way he seemed to be a nice guy, sincere, refined. He had a great sound to his voice. He made most songs original---or different from the original recorded versions. Problem was they all were done the same--so even though they were different from other versions of that song, they all started being done exactly the same---low, not the best at the beginning and a big huge ending. I wish his voice and control was more consistent throughout the entire song, cause he had the ability to make people really love him and pull for him.

I said from the start that Anwar was Awesome but he wasn't going to be our next AI. His voice is wonderful and really full and great to get lost in, but his style is perfect for smooth jazz and adult contemporary music, not pop. He was a little shaky on his lower range, but not as bad as the judges made it out to be. Of course his big soaring notes were actually the standard for quite some time- all of the other contestants felt the pressure to match it and for several weeks each contestant had a song with a big long note towards the end, which has died down since his departure from the show. Best wishes to him, he's great but not AI material.
